Chapter Seven

Adam didn’t understand why Jason seemed so utterly down and miserable the next morning when he joined his friend for breakfast. Even Athy seemed to notice there was a problem.

It was hard not to notice there was a problem, considering the way Jason had his arms crossed over the table and his face hidden inside of them. Athy was rubbing his back with one hand, trying to be soothing, asking if his stomach hurt.

To which he replied that it did.

Adam didn’t really get it. Stomachache or not, Jason had been so happy about the thought of spending time with his new love interest last night. Adam half expected to come down to breakfast just to see Jason trying to contain his stupid grin from both Adam and Athy.

Instead, he looked as though the world had ended, and he barely touched his food.

Then Adam thought of Kraigan, and how he’d asked the dragon to keep an eye on Jason.

Adam immediately tensed up. Shit. Jason and Kraigan didn’t get along. Kraigan had seemed to decide at whatever point that he was going to use Jason for an outlet for all of his frustrations, teasing him, taunting him, and Adam, for whatever reason, had asked him to be the one to watch over Jason.

What if he’d ruined Jason’s night? Interrupted his date? Or done any other number of things that could have destroyed his time with Kevan?

Adam felt insanely guilty, but he needed to know. “Was it Kraigan?”

Jason’s head flew up, his tired eyes wide. “What?”

He looked almost scared. Adam didn’t understand, but now he was panicking because he’d been the one to ask Kraigan to watch over Jason to begin with.

Adam had to fight to control his features, to keep it from being obvious on his face what he’d done. “I mean, I know you two don’t get along. Was he there? Did he…I don’t know, ruin your date?”

Jason’s lips thinned as he turned his head down to stare at his plate, which still had his salad and lamb on it. “No, he didn’t ruin anything.”

That wasn’t what Adam had been expecting to hear. He didn’t get it. Why was Jason so upset then?

He didn’t find out until he went back to his room to practice his reading. Because Adam was mated to the leader of the dragon warriors, who was also the cousin of the king of the nest, Adam wasn’t really given any chores to do. He’d tried, and he still did from time to time, helping Jason with his work so the two could have more free time together or making his own bed because he couldn’t get over the idea that he was being rude to the servants when he didn’t, but otherwise, there wasn’t much he could do. It didn’t look good for Dravick apparently if his cousin’s mate was seen doing menial tasks.

Which was fine. Adam liked learning math and reading anyway.

He’d been happy to see Novik back early. Adam’s heart leapt at the sight
